Coping with Colic

Photo
What is Colic?
  • Between 3 and 12 weeks of age, your baby may fall into a fussy period each day, during which they can't be comforted.
  • It is normal for it to last long periods of time, usually two hours or more.
  • Your baby will appear to have a tummy ache, pulling her legs up towards her chest.
  • The cause of colic is unknown. But be assured, your baby is not in any danger. This is a perfectly normal stage of development that just happens for some babies.

What's best to do?
  • Don't worry! It goes away with time.
  • Do what you know to check that she's alright. Make sure she's dry, well fed and comfortable.
  • Keep yourself calm. Try not to over-stimulate your baby.
  • Experiment with different soothing techniques. A combination may work best.
  • If she's breastfed, try taking some spices or different foods out of your diet, such as chocolate, cabbage, onions and cow's milk.

What are great soothing techniques?
  •    Baby massage! Gently rub her back and stomach with plant based oils such as sunflower or coconut oil, infused with a drop or two of an essential oil.
  • Put her in a baby swing or give her a pacificer.
  • Hold your baby with her tummy next to your warm body, or by placing your arm between her legs and the palm of your hand supporting her cheek and head.
  • Play soft, relaxing music, white noise, or soothing nature sounds.
  • Give her a warm bath.
  • Hold her in front of a mirror to look at herself.
  • Hold her in front of a fan or the open fridge or freezer.

When should I worry?
  •  If she cries six hours or more.
  • If she has a fever over 102 degrees F.
  • If she vomits more than four time in 24 hours she could have acid reflux, or something more serious.
  • If she's older then four months and still has colic.
